History

The GTM started as a self-convened group of tsunami scientists affiliated to research, academic and private organizations around the world to focus efforts and provide coordinated action for tsunami hazard and risk assessment.

History

Over the past ten years, participant organizations have been working together toward a science-based understanding of tsunami hazard and risk and the development of standards and methods accepted by the tsunami community. Several other individuals and organizations are presently collaborating on GTM activities.

On September 26, 2024, the Global Tsunami Model (GTM) Association was formally established with the signing of the Articles of Association by 18 tsunami scientists from 14 different science organisations in Croatia, Italy, France, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Turkiye, and the UK.

The inaugurational assembly elected a board, consisting of J. Behrens (Chair, Germany), A. Rudloff (Treasurer, Germany), F. Løvholt (Rapporteur, Norway), Fatemeh Jalayer (Deputy Chair, UK), S. Lorito (Member, Italy). Next steps in establishing proper procedures and refining a business model for the GTM were discussed.

Past Meetings

GTM was founded in an inauguration meeting in Rome, September 26, 2024. This was co-located with the final meeting of a COST1 Innovators Grant, following the COST Action AGITHAR2, which was instrumental to develop and refine a business plan for GTM.

This is, why the meetings facilitated through the COST Action in

  • Rome, January 2020,
  • Malaga, June 2022,

  • London, May 2023,
  • Berlin, July 2023,
  • Lisbon, March 2024,

were important milestones in the development of GTM. However, preceding the above-mentioned COST funded meetings several informal community gatherings, co-located with EGU, AGU, IUGG and other annual assemblies paved the way to GTM.
